Recycling Old, Unwanted Pieces

I have bags of old jewelry that I have accumulated over the years, from myself and others donating it.
Today, I went through one of the bags that my friend, Amber, gave to me recently. She said I could use anything I wanted to take apart and revamp - so I did! We'll call it....jewelry bypass surgery. With crystals.

Examples:

It also goes to show that you can learn from the most unexpected places. The second necklace depicts a tetragrammaton. At first glance, it looks like a simple pentagram, but the details are varied and conflicting. Being the curious person that I am, I did some research on this symbol, and found this:

"19th century occultist Eliphas Levi constructed this pentagram. It is commonly interpreted as a symbol of mankind, as many pentagrams are. However, it is a symbol of many things that unite in the existence of mankind, as is evidence by the variety of additional symbols involved.

Union of Opposites - -

There are several symbols representing the union of opposites, including:

The conjoined symbols of Venus and Mercury in the center of the image
The sun and moon symbols to the right and left of the Venus/Mercury symbol
The alpha and omega symbols above and below the Venus/Mercury symbol
The caduceus, which is below the Venus/Mercury symbol and partially within the omega

The Elements - -

The four physical elements are represented here by a cup, wand, sword, and disk. These associations were common in 19th century occultism both through tarot cards (which use such symbols as suits) and ritual tools.
The eyes at the top might represent spirit. While all elements were commonly assigned a point on the pentagram, the position of spirit was of particular significance. Levi himself believed point-up pentagrams (such as this one) to be good, with spirit ruling over matter.

Alternatively, it's been suggested that the absence of a symbol in the upper left (with the first syllable of Tetragrammaton) might represent spirit.

Astrological Signs - -

The idea of macrocosm and microcosm is that mankind, the microcosm, is a miniature reflection of the universe, the macrocosm. Thus, all of the elements can be found within mankind, and so can influences of the astrological planets. Each here is represented by astrological symbol:
Sun, Moon, Mercury and Venus in the center, as already described.
Mars on the upper left point
Venus (again) on the upper right point
Saturn on both lower points
Jupiter on the upper point

Feathers. I love them.

Since I'm home Mondays, it's one of the days where I get to stay in my pajamas and let the creativity flow. Today, I realized that I have way too many feathers, so I'll be working on some feather pieces. Here is an example of something I came up with a couple months ago:

It's an ear cuff made from wire. I shaped a 12g silver wire into a cuff and wrapped 20g black wire around it for added comfort, texture and contrast. The feather is a red tipped pheasant feather. Really beautiful color. There are some small beads to accent it. Not a terribly difficult project to do at home, with the right tools! :)

Listing examples

Here are some of my favorite pieces from the store.

Hand wrapped in wire, the symbolism of the tree of life is a large part of who I am.

This is a unique way to display some amethysts.

Wasn't sure how this would turn out when I started, but I'm pleasantly surprised. Wire wrapped ear cuff and genuine (purple dyed) rooster feathers/natural colored pheasant feather.

Girly and gothic. This is a handmade bat applique attached to a lovely little ring.

Another ring bracelet for the rockabilly mamas.

Obviously, I love working with cameos. This piece is striking, and features a cute set of conjoined twins. Red Swarovski crystals are delicately placed throughout the lace collar.

I don't always list jewelry. This is an example of a fun wallet that I revamped. Best to use this as a clutch, as the feathers might get squished in a purse.

Introduction!

I wonder what took me so long to start a blog? (Browsing photos on Tumblr doesn't count.)

Welcome to the first post of many. I know it won't happen overnight, but I hope in time, this blog will help to further my small business, and also help me to remember things that happen in life that I inevitably forget to write down.

As you can see, I am the proud owner of an Etsy store, which I started in February 2012. Before that, I mostly worked with acrylic paints and collage work. Jewelry is a completely different ballgame, one which I fell in love with almost instantly.

In the store, you will find reflections of my many moods and interests; gifts and treasures for those with style a little too "strange" to coincide with department store finds.  I try to keep my prices lower than similar items on Etsy, although the quality remains excellent.

By following this blog, you will gain access to promotions, coupon codes, new photos of items, as well as the occasional, non-jewelry related posts on the life of an "odd at heart", southern girl.

Cheers, and thank you for reading.
